Conclusions. The introduction of myocardial tissue characterization with ultrasound and
assessment of cyclic variation in backscatter has provided diagnostic tools that have the
potential, with further development, to identify patients at risk for those clinical events related
to the altered myocardial matrix. It is hoped that these techniques will then facilitate a critical
appraisal of interventions to retard or control this pathologic process.
